457 visa to be abolished and replaced

The Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has announced just a few hours ago that the 457 visa program will be abolished and replaced by a new temporary work visa.

Mr Turnbull said,

“The new visa will better target genuine skill shortages including in regional Australia and will include new requirements including previous work experience, better English language proficiency and labour market testing.”

He also acknowledged the need for businesses to access the skills they need to grow and invest and said,

“To help train Australians to fill skills gaps, we’ll also establish a new training fund.”
