Australia’s ranking in the world’s most powerful passports for 2020

According to the Henley Passport Index, which measures the most powerful passports according to travel-friendliness, the Australian passport has again ranked in the world’s top 10 most powerful passports. Australia came 9th in the list, alongside New Zealand, Malta, Czech Republic and Canada.

Australia’s ranking isn’t far behind from Japan, who took the top spot with visa-free access to 191 countries. Travelling with an Australian passport

Australian passport holders can generally travel without a visa to countries such as Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Fiji, New Zealand and all of Europe among others.

They can also access an Electronic Travel Authority (eTA) for countries such as the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and Sri Lanka and have access to visa on arrival in countries like Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Nepal, Maldives and Bangladesh.

This year, the Australian passport climbed one place in the annual list. The Index is updated annually to align with each country’s visa policy changes and is based on data provided by the International Air Transport Authority (IATA). It covers a total of 199 passports and 227 travel destinations.

Access to an Australian passport is one of the many benefits of obtaining Citizenship. Read about the other benefits of becoming an Australian Citizen here.
