Indian couple jailed for partner visa scam

An Indian couple, Cheshan Mashru, a migration agent and his celebrant wife Divya Gowda, was jailed last week for running a marriage visa scam, which involved paying Australian women to marry Indian men desperate to obtain permanent residence in Australia.

Cheshan and Divya worked together to pre-arrange and marry 16 couples upon their first meeting, enabling the men to apply for a partner visa and the Australian citizen women to receive thousands of dollars to set up joint bank accounts, send text messages, take photos and falsify other documents to make the application appear genuine until the visas were granted. Cheshan and Divya now face lengthy periods in prison.

Read our post on how scams like these have lead the Government to review the partner visa program.
